This is Mikel’s World Cup, Says Okocha

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on May 13, 2014

Ex-Nigeria international, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, expects Chelsea FC midfielder, John Obi Mikel, to use the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil to establish himself as one of the country’s greats.

Okocha, regarded as Nigeria’s greatest footballer of his generation, said this at the launch of Super Eagles World Cup theme song at the Globacom Headquarters on Adeola Odeku Street in Victoria island, Lagos on Monday.

The former Bolton Wanderers of England skipper says Mikel must justify his place as one of the leading figures in the squad.

John Obi Mikel Has Been Named in Nigeria 30-Man Provisional World Cup Squad.

“This is the biggest opportunity for Mikel to seize control of the midfield and prove to Nigerians that he is capable of lifting into that role without questions. For me, this is Mikel’s World Cup,” Okocha, 40, who scored 14 goals in 75 international appearances, said.

“He did it very well at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and should be able to do better because the World Cup is a bigger stage.”

Okocha refused to be drawn into assessing coach Stephen Keshi’s 30-man provisional squad list for the tournament, but stressed the former Togo and Mali tactician should be allowed to do his job.

“I believe he is capable of getting good results for Nigeria in Brazil. Nigerians should allow him to do the job to his ability. The buck stops on his table and has the final say on who to take to the World Cup,” Okocha opines.

Rio Ferdinand to Quit United This Summer

Rio Ferdinand is to leave Manchester United in the summer after the club chose not to renew his contract.

The 35-year-old centre-back won 14 trophies -barring United’s FA Cup victory in 2004; League Cup and Community Shield in 2010-and scored eight goals in 455 appearances.

His departure terminates a 12-year long relationship with the ‘Red Devils’.

“After 12 fantastic years, I have decided the time is right for me to move on,” Ferdinand said.

Rio Ferdinand Will Bring an End to His Twelve-Year Tie With Manchester United This Summer.

The ex-England international centre-back made his last appearance for the Old Trafford outfit in the 1-1 draw at Southampton in the final game of the season on Sunday.

He is reportedly understood to be nursing the intention of playing on, but yet to reveal his next club.

United are believed to have told Ferdinand to come back and be a ‘Club Legend’, just as many other great products of the club who have assumed ambassadorial roles post-exit.

“Circumstances didn’t allow for me to say goodbye the way I would have liked but I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my team-mates, staff, the club and the fans for an unbelievable 12 years that I’ll never forget. Winning trophies I dreamed about as a kid came true at this club.

“I am feeling fit and healthy, ready for a new challenge and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me.”

Ferdinand joined United from Leeds for the then Premier League record of £30m. He initially struggled to seal his place in the team starting eleven, but eventually became a key part of the side that won the 2002/03 league title.

He received an eight-month ban after being found guilty of missing a drug test in September 2003 and waited until the following year to return.

He soon established himself again as one of the backbones of United defence while helping the side clinch the 2006/07 championship and defended it the following season- same season he captained the team to an European Champions League victory over Chelsea (via penalties) in Moscow.

He has won six Premier League titles in total, two League Cups, four Community Shields, One Champions League and World Club Cup.

His lasts league winner’s medal came in 2012/13 season, when he also earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

His performance that season led United to reward him with a new one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until this July.

Tim Sherwood has left his position as Tottenham head coach, after guiding the Premier League club to a sixth-place finish.

Ex-Spurs midfielder, Sherwood, succeeded Andres Villas-Boas in December, with the White Hart Lane outfit five points adrift of the Champions League qualifying spots. He ended the campaign ten points shy of fourth-placed Arsenal but sealed a place in next season’s Europa League with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

“We appointed Tim mid-season as someone who knew both the players and the Club. We agreed an 18-month contract with a break clause at the end of the season and we have now exercised that option.

Tim Sherwood Won 14, Drew 4 and Lost 10 of His 28 Matches as Tottenham Manager. Impressive.

“On behalf of the club, I should like to state our thanks for all his efforts during his years with us. We wish him great success in his managerial career,” Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said.

The 45-year-old English coach, who made 3 international appearances in his playing days, had a top flight win percentage of 59%- the best of any Tottenham boss in the history of the top division.

He joined Tottenham as a player in 1999 from Blackburn, where he won the Premier League title in 1995, and left the club in 2003.

He returned to the sides coaching staff in 2008 under manager Harry Redknapp, following shot spells at Portsmouth and Coventry City.

He was serving as a technical coordinator with the ‘Whites’ when chairman Levy asked him to take charge of the first team on interim basis.

“Moving forward now the season is over, we shall embark on the process of finding a new Head Coach,” Levy continued. “We have a talented squad and exciting young players coming through. We need to build on this season, develop our potential and inspire the kind of performance s that we associate with our great club.”

Do Arsenal need a new striker?

Olivier Giroud still strugling to replicate Robin Vanpersies scintillating form

When Robin Vanpersie announced his decision to quit his boyhood club, it didnt come down well with the Arsenal faithful as they expressed their frustrations to his verdict.

Infact some fans went berserk by wishing him dead, whilst others predicted an awful season at his new club, Manchester United- it was horrendous.

However, it wasnt to be the case. Robin guided the red devils to a 20th league title; scoring tons of mouth-watering goals.

That same season, Wenger bought Olivier Giroud from french side Montpellier for a fee believed to be around £9.6 million.

Even though Giroud showed hes worth every penny in his maiden season in london, however, he didnt provide that Robin-esque spark that the fans were accustomed to. His lack of will to chase after the ball and poor finishes compounded the frustrations, that fans chanted We need a striker at match-days, despite the striker finishing with 17 goals and 11 assists in 47 appearances in his first season.

Last season would ostensibly become his best campaign at the club. Giroud, now settled at the club, continued to work in tandem with new recruit Mesut Ozil and scored some fine goals. He was the main catalyst that guided Arsenal to a well-deserved Fa Cup final against HullCity.

With Nicklas Bendtner set to leave after failing to commit to the club, and Yaya Sanogo still raw, the gunners would be hoping to bring a striker to compliment Giroud despite his improved demeanor infront of goal.

The gunners are linked with new faces this summer, Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa, Radamel Falcao to name a few.

We throw the puzzling question back to our readers: Do Arsenal need a new striker?

Europa League: Reyes wants Benfica respect

Posted by: @femi4arsenal on May 14, 2014

Former Arsenal midfielder Jose Antonio Reyes has warned his club to prepare for war as they battle Benfica in a pulsating final in Turin.

The player was influential as Sevilla beat Valencia to secure a final spot, in a bid to grab their first European trophy since 2006-2007. Whilst fellow finalist Benfica defeated Juventus.

He told press: I played for Benfica in the past. They are a great team and we must respect them,

We have made it to the final because we never gave up. The semi-final tie with Valencia was madness.

The final will be a great game. It doesnt matter which team we face because it will be a special match either way.

Our fans are amazing and deserve a victory.
